Green Door Antiques is a family antique business. In the 1940’s Laurie Brennan Paul opened the first Green Door Antiques in what is now a historic building on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo, N.Y. Rosemarie Schickler and Patty Schickler-Scott have continued the family tradition, now celebrating three generations in business; with eager 4th generation helpers.
At Green Door Antiques, you’ll find fine antiques: a collection of beautiful and interesting things. You will find sterling, coin and silverplate flatware and holloware; glass, china, decorative arts, and furniture. Our passion however, is silver. We have come to specialize in sterling and coin silver flatware – the rare, interesting and unusual pieces, the works of art that dazzle and bewilder; the silver that belongs in the most important museum of all - your home.
Our Sterling Traditions
We enjoy many family traditions that have been passed down through the generations.
The family meal is one of our favorites - often choosing a particular dish to cook - just to use the ‘cool’ servers. Good smells, good feelings, good times. We take turns setting the table and it is always a favorite task. Each person takes pride in preparing the table for the meal in their own way with flatware, tableware, glasses or stemware, and linens, and decorations. We enjoy the soft patina, balanced weight, and craftsmanship of sterling flatware.
It does not have to be elaborate or fancy either. Keeping spoons in a spooner available for use anytime is a family tradition we have kept alive. At breakfast, for example we have a selection of different pattern silver soup spoons in a spooner that we use for cereal. Some spoons do have family names on them- and it provides an opening to tell a story about Grandma, Aunt Jessie or Uncle Honey, - keeping their spirit alive. We also create our own ‘imaginary’ relatives when there is a name or monogram on a piece of silver that isn’t familiar. This is story telling at its’ finest- oh the life ‘imaginary Aunt Gertrude’ lived was quite spectacular. Kids and adults have fun using the different patterns; learning names and history along the way. Enjoying sterling silver in our everyday lives is just one of many traditions I hope to continue for my children.
Your Sterling Traditions
Through the years we have learned that the best part of this antiques business and collecting silver is YOU. We have enjoyed countless stories of how your familys’ continue old traditions and create new ones. We revel in your thoughtful gifts you buy for each other, celebrating birthdays, holidays and adding to or starting your collections. We have gotten to know you as you add to your grandchild’s pattern one teaspoon at a time, or start a new pattern as a set for a new daughter-in law. We also learn something new everyday thanks to you. To celebrate this we would love to share your stories and traditions on our web site.
